It is almost needless to add that the presence of the vessels in the waters of the Colony, and their being here, previously well known to me; yet under the circumstances I deemed it right to call officially on the Harbor Master to report generally regarding them.
The Return which that Officer made (a copy of which I enclose), was transmitted to the Chief Justice with a request that I might be favored with any suggestions for my adoption which he might be able to offer.
To that letter I have not as yet received any reply, but when holding a personal interview with the Chief Justice, I enquired as to his object in forwarding his letter of the 23rd Ultimo, unless with the information gained, which exactly what was expected, there being no legal remedy for a state of affairs so much deplored.
